CNN anchor Fareed Zakaria joined PBS’s Firing Line with Margaret Hoover this week to discuss the 2024 presidential election and sounded the alarm on what he sees as former President Donald Trump’s “most harmful legacies.”

“We’ve just watched Republicans stall Ukraine aid for a number of months. If Donald Trump returns to the presidency, how do you suppose the present faction of Republican isolationism finally ends up expressing itself in our nationwide overseas coverage?” Hoover requested Zakaria.

“I’m very worried about it,” replied the veteran journalist and commentatory, including:

I used to be, properly describing where the Republican Party was once in 1999. I feel we’ve a brand new Republican Party as of late. And I feel that this has been one of the crucial, to my mind, most harmful legacies of what Donald Trump has completed. He has again the Republican Birthday Celebration back to its isolationism. What folks steadily put out of your mind is the Republican Party used to be used to be deeply isolationist.

And in the Thirties, folks like Buckley and and, Reagan and Nixon transformed the Republican Birthday Party and made it an internationalist birthday party. But what Trump has completed is, is taking it back to its isolationist roots. And I worry an ideal deal about this, as a result of unless now, The us’s international engagement was once not a partisan problem. The actual insurance policies would possibly had been, but the concept of The united states being deeply engaged with the arena used to be something each parties agreed on.

And if we turn out having the roughly debate we just had over Ukraine, where every time america is thinking about making commitments, helping folks in another country, opposing, , disruptive dictatorships, each time you find yourself with a partisan divide, it’s a horrific situation for us to be in, bad location for the sector to be.
