Pollster Frank Luntz believes Thursday night time’s debate between President Joe Biden and former President Donald Trump could contribute to the undoing of American democracy.

Talking with Martha Raddatz on ABC’s This Week, Luntz said the controversy could “add to our discontent and division” slightly than “heal it.” And Luntz recommended that if the debate furthers discontent and division, American Democracy might come “undone.”

“I must be candid with you,” Luntz said. “I’m very apprehensive about the end result of this debate. A lot of people are going to observe. A lot of people have made up their minds about the two candidates, however haven’t made up their minds whether or not or no longer our democracy still works. If we’ve got every other response like that first 2020 debate — where the 2 candidates just go at each other — at some point, our device breaks. Our democracy comes undone. And so I’m going to be watching now not just for the cute quip, or attempting to determine who received or lost, however I’m going to be gazing American reactions and whether or no longer this adds to our discontent and our division, or whether it begins to heal it.”

Raddatz’s follow up concerned with former President Donald Trump.

“The subsequent debates…President Trump did calm down in these debates,” Raddatz stated. “It wasn’t like the first in 2020. So do you assume he’s realized any classes after breaking all of the china in that initial debate? I mean, it doesn’t look like he needs to vary so much. He’s already saying he has no technique, accusing that Joe Biden will get a shot within the arm and be jacked up before the talk. Is that what has you concerned?”

But Luntz’s response mostly excited by President Joe Biden.

“It’s how they deal with each and every other,” Luntz said. “Is it with recognize or contempt? Is it trying to hear and analyze, or is it looking to abuse and attack? And Donald Trump is one of the best at it. He is excellent at tearing apart his opponents. The query — and the object I’m going to be watching for — is how Joe Biden responds. As a result of don’t disregard, it was once Joe Biden who said to Donald Trump, ‘Would you simply shut up?’ And the concept you say that to a President of the US in a national debate — that coarseness divides and undermines this experience of democracy, being civilized and disciplined. And I just hope that both candidates remember that there actually are some things more essential than an election. The next generation.”
