CNN’s Chris Cillizza criticized Rep. Jim Clyburn (D-SC), the House’s third-ranking Democrat, for evaluating America’s present political local weather to that of pre-Nazi Germany.
Friday, Clyburn related the state of American politics to that in Germany before Adolf Hitler took energy in the early 1930s. He later doubled down on the remark. The Democrat from South Carolina aimed his feedback at some supporters of former President Donald Trump.
In a section he published on CNN’s web site Monday, Cillizza opined Clyburn had broken what he called “the first rule of politics”:
Rule No. 1 of politics goes like this: Don’t examine the rest to Nazi Germany. Just don’t.
[…]
[It’s] worth noting here that comparing anything to the Nazi regime, which resulted in the systemic murder of greater than 6 million Jews, is a mistake. It just is. There’s nothing in our current second that suggests we’re any place with regards to that.
Cillizza agreed democracy could be threatened by individuals who make a selection to not settle for election outcomes but criticized Clyburn’s language.
“We completely must be vigilant concerning the possible rise of authoritarian politicians who would wipe out things like the rule of thumb of regulation to further their own political ambitions,” Cillizza wrote. “However let’s cease making the Nazi Germany comparison. For all of our sakes.”
Clyburn told Fox News digital the U.S. is “heading in the right direction to repeat what happened in Germany.”
Later, during an interview with Shannon Bream on Fox Information Sunday, the Democratic Home Majority Whip said, “The tips are very clear. I’ve studied historical past all of my lifestyles. I’ve taught historical past. I’m telling you, what I see here are parallels to what the history was on this world back within the 1930s in Germany, in Italy.”
