President Donald Trump claimed Democrats tried to rig November’s election earlier than “they gave up.”
Trump has now lied about widespread voter fraud or tried voter fraud in all three elections by which he has been a candidate – even when he has won the contest.
Speaking at a gathering of Republicans for a Congressional Institute adventure at his Trump Doral hotel on Monday, the president patted himself on the back over his first term before claiming his opponents tried to steal the election:
I did a great job. It used to be a horrible border in 2016. After which– but that border was beautiful compared to what we’ve now. So, I didn’t talk about it. And we did nice.
I mean, appear, we got, I received tens of millions of more votes in 2020 than I obtained in 2016. Nobody ever got– I received essentially the most votes of any Republican in history in 2020. However this time, I said “Let’s make it too big to rig. We’re gonna make it too large to rig.” And that’s what came about. [applause] And so they couldn’t. They tried. They tried, these cheating guys, these cheating folks. But they tried, but they gave up.
Trump has falsely claimed the 2020 election was once rigged against him. After shedding that race, he tried to force officials in states he lost to overturn the results. Those efforts culminated in the lethal Capitol insurrection of 2021.
After profitable the 2016 election despite notching fewer votes than Hillary Clinton, Trump falsely claimed that he in reality “received the popular vote if you happen to deduct the millions of people who voted illegally.”
