TIME Magazine reporter Michael Scherer cracked up MSNBC host Chris Matthews and his fellow panel visitor on Thursday all through a conversation about the way forward for the Republican Party. Amid a dialogue in regards to the GOP’s rebranding efforts, and the seeming willingness of some influential participants of the birthday party to embrace gay marriage, Scherer used to be requested if these modifications will lend a hand the GOP win national elections again. Scherer spoke back that the GOP’s problem as a complete is that “it’s illiberal and out of contact.”
Matthews asked Huffington Post reporter Sam Stein if he concept that the GOP’s evangelical wing would simply withdraw from politics. He stated that it was once no longer unprecedented for the evangelical wing of the GOP to disengage from politics, noting that the non secular right used to be no longer a political power previous to the late 1970s.

Matthews asked Scherer if the birthday party’s 2012 platform, which called for a constitutional modification defining marriage as present between a man and a woman, “is it gonna kill ‘em?”
“It ties into a bigger problem this party has, which is that it’s illiberal and out of touch,” Scherer opined.
Matthews and his friends burst into laughter at Scherer’s remark. “Michael, you nailed it,” Matthews agreed.
