The writer of the anti-Trump publication The Bulwark, Sarah Longwell, battled Stephen Hayes over the weekend – the CEO and editor of rival anti-Trump outlet The Dispatch.
Hayes kicked off the debate on Friday by writing, “Grim second in our politics. Some conservatives embracing a nutty conspiracy theorist like RFK Jr. and others fluffing a statist modern Kiel Kamala Harris. What a mess the up to date conservative motion is.”
Longwell, who also conducts focal point teams and is a political strategist, responded to Hayes, “Truthfully, what are you speaking about Steve? The unhappy state of the conservative motion has nothing to do with some conservatives balloting for a Democrat to maintain Trump far from energy. The in style capitulation to and supreme include of Trump destroyed the conservative movement.”
The battle between Hayes and Longwell highlighted the divide inside the anti-Trump right over simply how much to include Vice President Kamala Harris in her effort to keep Trump from a 2d term.
Hayes hit back at Longwell, “There’s a giant distinction between “some conservatives vote casting for a Democrat to maintain Trump far from power” and longtime conservatives who abandon conservative ideas and insurance policies to raise that Democrat. It’s imaginable to oppose Trump without lionizing Kamala, right?”
Longwell spoke back, “I’m sorry but I believe you’re caught in tribal muck. Harris’s speech remaining night time was once, each in substance and elegance, very good. She made a better case for The usa than any baby-kisser in virtually a decade. There was a lot in it for people like us. It’s not “fluffing”. All of your prognosis simply ignores how bad Trump is. Beating him requires making an affirmative case for the choice. There’s no betrayal in that. We are clear where we disagree on policy.”
“Nah, my place is anti-tribal, actually. Trump is a dangerous demagogue, uniquely unfit to serve any other term as president. Harris is a far-left senator now trying to run away from her rhetoric and record. Opposing Trump doesn’t require pretending Harris is something she’s now not,” Hayes spoke back.
The Atlantic’s Tom Nichols jumped in to protect Longwell, writing, “Steve’s position seems to be that conservatives, if they feel they [heavy sigh] must vote for Harris, should go to the polls as in the event that they’re on a demise march. @SarahLongwell25 is right: This is common right and flawed and conservatives need not put on sackcloth to do the fitting factor.”
Good day Tom – You don’t need to speculate about what my position “seems to be,” which you could simply learn it. My original tweet objected to conservatives embracing RFK Jr or “fluffing” Kamala Harris. Which part do you object to? https://t.co/4qeq40fMzX

Longwell jumped back in after Hayes spoke back to Nichols and added, “No! Your original tweet mentioned that some conservatives “fluffing” Harris had been chargeable for the sad state of the conservative movement. Which is nuts! The unhappy state of the conservative motion is completely as a result of Trump and the conservatives who’ve capitulated to him. However you’re extra curious about taking pictures at people who are willing to say Kamala is healthier than Trump and must win. That’s why I felt compelled to speak up.”
No! Your unique tweet stated that some conservatives “fluffing” Harris had been responsible for the sad state of the conservative motion. Which is nuts! The sad state of the conservative motion is fully as a result of Trump and the conservatives who’ve capitulated to him. But you’re… https://t.co/bPgXQQUq8c
