Visionary filmmaker David Lynch — recognized for surreal hits like Blue Velvet and the Twin Peaks sequence — has died. He was once seventy eight.

Lynch announced in 2024 that he had been identified with emphysema and used to be no longer able to go away his home to direct. His family announced his death Thursday on his Facebook account.

“It’s with deep be apologetic about that we, his domestic, announce the passing of the man and the artist, David Lynch,” the post read. “We might enjoy some privateness presently. There’s a major gap on the planet now that he’s not with us. However, as he would say, ‘Preserve your eye on the donut and now not on the outlet.’ It’s a phenomenal day with golden sunshine and blue skies the entire way.”

In addition to Blue Velvet, Lynch’s filmography contains Mulholland Pressure, Eraserhead, and Wild at coronary Heart. Lynch also directed an sick-fated giant reveal adaptation of Frank Herbert’s Dune in 1984. Though it was panned at the time, the movie has gained a cult following over time.

Lynch’s talents spanned a long way beyond the director’s chair. He also made tune, painted, and took up woodworking. Lynch even turned a few of these passions into presentations like Weather Report (wherein Lynch gave the climate forecast in Los Angeles) and What Is David Working On Today? (a show about his woodworking projects). In 1991, Michael Jackson individually requested that Lynch direct a teaser trailer for his album “Unhealthy.”
