Barstool Sports founder Dave Portnoy called the U.S. govt “indifferent from fact” for the proposed ban on the social media app TikTok.

In April 2024, a GOP-backed bill was signed into regulation requiring ByteDance — the Chinese company that developed and owns TikTok — to divest from the divest from the app. U.S. officers raised issues about TikTok’s information collection and its skill to unfold potential misinformation.

ByteDance has until Jan. 19 to discover a new buyer. Should that now not happen — and must President Joe Biden not offer an extension on the closing date — new downloads of the app would be stopped by using the regulation. President-elect Donald Trump has signaled he’s going to block enforcement of the law upon getting into place of job, despite having pushed for a TikTok ban in his first time period.

On Thursday, Portnoy referred to as out the federal government for not considering the fact that some individuals have made livelihoods on the platform.

“If the U.S. executive bans TikTok, it’s just more proof they don’t provide a fuck in regards to the American people in any respect,” Portnoy mentioned in a video posted online. “Like, they have got no clue what’s going on. They’re detached from reality. The amount of people — companies, creators, people, whatever you wanna say — who generate income through TikTok, they have got no clue; so simply to strip these people of their livelihoods in a single day because why? The one thing I might give you [is] you’re afraid China might use it for disinformation, keep an eye on the algorithm, express folks what they see.

“Hear, if people are too dumb to check the place they’re getting data that is important within the first situation — what, the U.S. government doesn’t do disinformation? There’s fake shit in all places you go!”

Portnoy brought that there’s “no means” the U.S. government would willingly “wreck” the countless jobs which were made on account of TikTok. He also claimed that the worry of Chinese disinformation pales compared to the disinformation coming from The united states.

“There’s just no manner you could ruin that possibly jobs, livelihoods, careers, advertising, since you’re frightened of Chinese disinformation,” he endured. “I’m extra concerned about American executive disinformation at this point than the Chinese language. Let’s take one factor at a time.”
