Rep. Gerry Connolly (D-VA) accused President Donald Trump and Elon Musk of making “McCarthy generation 2.0” amongst executive employees of their efforts to scale back executive spending.
Connolly was once part of a congressional hearing on “Govt Effectivity & Waste” on Wednesday that descended into chaos as Connolly pushed for Musk to be subpoenaed and questioned over the function of his DOGE (Division of Executive Effectivity) in the federal executive group of workers.
“Federal workers, I believe, have long past from shock and dismay to now anger and determination. ‘Hi there, we’re electorate too and we’re doing a job and we’re now not going to be punished for doing our jobs,’” Connolly instructed MSNBC’s Ana Cabrera on Thursday.
Connolly red-flagged federal staff being fired and agencies being gutted as part of Trump and Musk’s plan to vastly cut govt spending. The Virginia congressman stated he’s heard “tales” in his own district, which has many executive employees, of supplier payments being “interrupted,” “intrusion of personal data,” and even “loyalty oaths” for workers.
The Democrat argued that Trump and Musk are giving a comeback to the McCarthy technology. Joseph McCarthy used to be a senator who led hearings within the ’50s taking a look into supposed communist propaganda. The infamous hearings led to a lot of folks dropping their jobs and blacklists being created in Hollywood.
“This is very chilling,” Connolly mentioned of Trump and Musk. “It truly is just like the McCarthy technology 2.zero for lots of federal workers and for all people as smartly. However they’re standing up and they’re being heard and I believe that’s a hopeful sign that Elon Musk and Donald Trump aren’t with impunity going to simply have their way with the federal body of workers.”
