Embattled and indicted Rep. George Santos (R-NY), who’s running for reelection next year, said he’ll continue to take action even if Congress expels him.
The House voted on a decision to expel Santos this week, but failed to get a easy majority of votes – let on my own the two-thirds majority required to eject him from the chamber.
Santos faces federal legal expenses of conspiracy, wire fraud, making false statements, falsifying data, bank card fraud, and identification theft. He pleaded no longer responsible to the 23 counts he faces.
CNN’s Manu Raju interviewed Santos on Friday. The congressman maintained his innocence and blamed his 2022 marketing campaign treasurer in a snippet of their dialog aired throughout The Scenario Room.
“The feds are pronouncing that you simply and your marketing campaign treasurer conspired to make it appear your campaign was hitting fundraising benchmarks to get on the radar of GOP officials,” Raju stated. “Were you aware about this?”
“Manu, I by no means, ever submitted and even looked at a single document,” Santos answered. “I’m a candidate. Candidates don’t handle money. Candidates do not handle finances. Candidates do not deal with filings. I don’t understand what the FEC submitting system looks as if.”
Raju then learn testimony from the treasurer declaring that she and Santos conspired to prepare dinner the books.
“Folks will say no matter they’ve to, to chop whatever deal they have to chop as a way to retailer their disguise,” the congressman stated.
“You’re the chief of the marketing campaign,” Raju pushed again.
“That’s no longer proper,” Santos insisted.
“But you’re in cost,” the reporter pushed back. “Must the buck stop with you?”
“Well, the buck must cease on the candidate,” Santos responded, relenting. “That’s real.”
Raju went on to report that Santos said he’ll run for reelection whether he is expelled. The House Ethics Committee is currently conducting its personal investigation into him, and its findings may tip the stability towards him in a future vote.
