Google and MPEG LA have announced that they’ve come to an agreement over Google's VP8 video codec. eleven patent holders have agreed that any patented techniques utilized by VP8 can be used without payment of a royalty, eternally. In 2010, Google sold On2, a company that developed video compression algorithms. Rapidly after the acquisition, Google provided On2's VP8 algorithm on a pereptually royalty-free basis, so that it can be readily used in open source initiatives. MPEG LA sells licenses to various patented technologies. Video compression algorithms reminiscent of the commonly used H.264 are regularly lined via more than one patents held by more than one firms. MPEG LA works with these patent holders to pool them collectively and supply easy license agreements that duvet the diversity of patents in order that the algorithms may also be licensed while not having to barter with every company in my view.
