An ethics investigation into Rep. Matt Gaetz (R-FL) and his alleged involvement with a teenage lady gave the impression to be ramping up, in line with CNN reporter Paula Reid.
Reid instructed Jake Tapper Wednesday, “We’ve discovered that the House Ethics Committee investigating Congressman Gaetz has achieved a new round of outreach to attainable witnesses, including a girl who was once 17 years previous when she allegedly had sexual contact with Congressman Gaetz.”
Reid added:
We realized they have got also reached out to the Justice Division asking for materials from its years-long investigation into the congressman where they examined this alleged sexual contact with a minor. They didn’t not directly choose to charge the congressman.
Now, based on our new reporting tonight, the congressman says, quote, “Those allegations were not actual, have never been authentic, and the people who spread these lies had been exposed, indicted, and imprisoned.”
Reid stressed that Gaetz was once no longer charged with any wrongdoing, even if his affiliate, Joel Greenberg, admitted to a couple of crimes, including soliciting and having sex with the minor in question. Greenberg was sentenced to eleven years in prison.
She persevered, “The Ethics Committee had its personal probe starting in 2021 into the congressman,” but put it on pause to yield to the federal investigation. “After the federal investigation wrapped up last year, this was all revived.”
Reid stated that that Gaetz “privately blamed” former House Speaker Kevin McCarthy (R-CA) for reviving the probe, and that this belief could have been an element as Gaetz labored to oust McCarthy from the speakership, although the lawmaker denies this.
