Rep. Mike Turner (R-OH) defended President Donald Trump’s determination to pardon one of the “peaceful” attendees at the Jan. 6, 2021 Capitol riots on Wednesday, although criticized the “sweeping” nature of the pardons which freed individuals who were violent.

Asked through CNN host Jake Tapper about House Speaker Mike Johnson’s (R-LA) choice to set up a new Jan. 6 investigation subcommittee, Turner said:

I believe January sixth is a type of days where I think almost all Americans’ hearts wreck in both the visions of individuals bodily breaking into the Capitol, folks in reality assaulting police officers. The scope, I think, of Trump’s pardons had been sudden, as we unquestionably understand that there are individuals who did hastily prove in the Capitol, who had been peaceable, who have been prosecuted politically, and there without a doubt has been just, , that day has been used for political purposes.

We had, in fact, Pelosi’s January sixth make a selection committee that was once very, very political. There are things to continue to analyze, however on the related time, I feel we’re seeing in reality from either side a perfect subject that doesn’t truly represent what I feel the American individuals see that day and their concerns.

Tapper requested, “The people who broke into the Capitol, vandalized it, attacked law enforcement officials, attacked Capitol Hill police, they had been pardoned. Do you’ve got an issue with that?”

“I feel that was very surprising, and surely, sure, I do,” spoke back Turner. “Many people do and I believe the sweeping nature of it indisputably used to be unexpected.”

He argued, then again, that “the Division of Justice, , it viciously prosecuted individuals, some of which ended up within the Capitol now not even figuring out how they ended up there or that there had been any violence in any way. There were individuals who had– there used to be such an injustice in how they had been prosecuted, who rightly deserve a pardon, and the truth that January sixth has been used so politically is– in point of fact continues the travesty.”

“I completely agree that there are individuals who deserved to be pardoned,” Turner declared.

Tapper responded, “I mean, I’m simply– I don’t hear you condemning the fact that people who are beating up Capitol Hill police officers who actually would lay down their lives to offer protection to you and your family, I don’t hear you expressing difficulty that they were pardoned.”

Turner shot back, “Jake, if truth be told I did. You probably did hear me say that.”
