A Republican Senator showing on Meet the Press proper after House Speaker Mike Johnson (R-LA) rejected the Speaker’s suggestion that Ukraine President Volodymyr Zelensky should step down.
In the section straight away following Johnson’s on Sunday’s adaptation of the NBC political speak express, Sen. James Lankford (R-OK) disagreed with the Speaker — who mentioned “either [Zelensky[ wants to come back to his senses and are available again to the table in gratitude, or any person else needs to lead the us of a to do that.”
“Let me ask you about one thing I just mentioned with Speaker Johnson, which is that Senator Lindsey Graham has stated that President Zelensky could wish to resign to ensure that this peace process to move forward,” NBC’s Kristen Welker told Lankford. “What say you, senator, do you suppose President Zelensky might need to resign?”
“I don’t agree!” Lankford mentioned. “I’m not concerned with calling on the resignation of other world leaders. I didn’t adore it when Chuck Schumer asked for [Benjamin] Netanyahu to be eliminated. I don’t find it irresistible when other members of the Senate ask for Zelensky to be eliminated either. Somewhat frankly, I think that would spiral Ukraine into chaos at this time, trying to find who’s the negotiator to convey a subject to peace.”
Welker pressed Lankford about the U.S. stance on Ukraine — and whether the U.S. is forsaking an ally — within the wake of Friday’s chaotic Oval Place of work meeting between Zelensky and President Donald Trump.
“In response to what you witnessed within the Oval Office, Senator, are you concerned that the United States is turning its again on Ukraine?” Welker requested.
Lankford answered with a position that is fast changing into an outlier on the Right — an unequivocal condemnation of Russia and Vladimir Putin, together with a powerful safety of Ukraine.
“No, we’re now not turning our back on Ukraine, nor should we,” Lankford stated. “Putin is a murderous KGB thug that murders his political enemies and is a dictator there. And so we’ve seen that. We’ve viewed his aggression.”
