On Tuesday night, Bloomberg CEO Daniel Doctoroff chaired the Committee to Protect Journalists’ (CPJ) annual World Press Freedom Awards dinner Tuesday evening. The irony was once not misplaced on the journalists within the room, a lot of whom laughed and stated the bizarre scenario.

Bloomberg News has come beneath fireplace not too long ago for suspending its Hong Kong-based reporter Michael Forsythe a couple of weeks in the past. In line with The New York Instances, employees declare that Bloomberg EIC Matthew Winkler refused to post Forsythe’s long-type investigations into collusion between the Chinese government and robust businessmen there.

The identical sources characterized the transfer as “self-censorship” to give protection to the information organization from angering Chinese language leaders and dropping get admission to. “If we run the story, we’ll be kicked out of China,” Winkler allegedly advised other staffers.

Bloomberg’s high pros, including outgoing NYC Mayor Michael Bloomberg, denied such accusations.

And but, during Doctoroff’s speech, tables stuffed with journalists had been pretty making feedback and laughing on the irony of the situation. In keeping with a few attendees, there used to be a virtually collective grumbling while Doctoroff spoke at size in regards to the importance of press freedom right through an event advocating for greater protections for global journalists.

Some attendees also mentioned the same irony when Bloomberg’s Chief Content Officer Norman Pearlstine took the rostrum as a presenter for the press freedom experience.

In step with the CPJ web site, the 2013 Global Press Freedom Awards was once “an annual acceptance of the brave reporting that defines free media.”
