The View co-host Pleasure Behar confronted Gov. Jared Polis (D-CO) on Colorado’s purple flag legislation in light of the shooting that killed 5 individuals and wounded 18 others at Membership Q, an LGBTQ nightclub in Colorado Springs on Saturday.
The suspect, Anderson Lee Aldrich, 22, went undetected through Colorado’s pink flag law, which Polis signed in 2019. That law prohibits the possession, purchase or receiving of firearms with the aid of anybody who “poses a significant possibility to self or others by using having a firearm in his or her custody or keep watch over,” in step with the Colorado General Meeting.
“Simply closing 12 months this suspect was once arrested for allegedly making a bomb possibility, but for some purpose, that didn’t set off Colorado’s purple flag regulation, which you signed in 2019,” said Behar throughout Tuesday’s episode of The View. “How is that that you can think of? Why didn’t authorities take his weapons away? If an incident like this didn’t trigger the legislation, what will trigger the legislation? Don’t you think this needs to be evaluated again, sir?”
Polis replied that the entire facts in regards to the shooting aren’t but recognized, but didn’t rule out reviewing the purple flag legislation:
After all presently, our focal point is truly with the victims and therapeutic. It is this pink flag law, which means that, this was once a young man — we don’t know all of the fact but we will be able to in the coming days and weeks – but apparently a danger he made, a bomb threat, most likely a shooting chance in his mom’s regional, he used to be apprehended, charges weren’t pressed.
It will possibly have been the mother dropped the fees or possibly they decided to go a unique manner. What this will have to set off legislation enforcement can then searching for a purple flag or excessive possibility protection order simply to eliminate custody of weapons from somebody who could be unhealthy, proper? So not convicted of against the law but a mentally unhealthy state, and that’s what we’d like to look more of in Colorado. This can be a new regulation in Colorado, we’ve used it a pair hundred times. But it’s in reality as much as native law enforcement and, on this case, it in reality seems like we must take a second take a look at how our native sheriffs used this legislation to give protection to individuals…
