Morning Joe co-host Mika Brzezinski struck a conciliatory tone on Wednesday’s express after David Frum offered his tackle the fraught nomination of Pete Hegseth as Secretary of Security.

President-go with Donald Trump nominated Hegseth, a former Fox Information host, to the post closing month. Hegseth has been dogged by means of allegations of sexual assault, serial adultery, and reeking of alcohol while on the job. He denies the accusations of assault and says he does no longer have a consuming problem.

The nominee has been making the rounds on Capitol Hill to persuade some skeptical Republican senators of his health for the job.

On MSNBC’s flagship morning application, The Atlantic author asked for his tackle the standing of Hegseth’s nomination.

Frum replied:

Smartly, just given what one sees on digital camera, if you’re too inebriated for Fox News, you’re very, very inebriated certainly. So, that’s alarming. In 1989, President George H.W. Bush nominated John Tower, senator from Texas, for Secretary of Safety. And Tower was once an awfully substantial individual, an actual defense mental, any person who deeply understood defense, unlike the current nominee.

And it emerged that Tower had a drinking drawback. And when he was ingesting too much, he would make himself a nuisance or worse to girls around him. And for that reason, his nomination collapsed in 1989. You don’t wanna think that our ethical standards have declined so much you could say, “Let’s take all the drinking, the entire intercourse-pesting, subtract any data of defense, subtract any leadership. And there’s your subsequent Secretary of Defense for the twenty first century.”

Later in the program, Brzezinski doubled back to Frum’s feedback, which she rebuked as “flippant.”

Earlier than we go to interrupt, a little bit previous on this block, there used to be a remark made about Fox News in our coverage about Pete Hegseth and the rising number of allegations about his conduct over the years and conceivable addiction to alcohol or considerations with alcohol. The remark was a bit of too flippant for this second that we are in. We simply wanna make that remark as neatly. We wanna make that clear. We have now differences in coverage with Fox Information and that’s a excellent debate that we should have regularly. However presently, I just wanna say to assert there are a variety of good people who work at Fox Information who care about Pete Hegseth and we’ll wanna depart it at that.

Later, Frum took to the pages of The Atlantic to address the issue, explaining that a producer chided him over the feedback.

“It is a very ominous factor if our top boards for discussion of public affairs are already feeling the coolness of intimidation and responding with efforts to soothe,” he wrote.”
