Meet the Press host Kristen Welker challenged Trump operating mate JD Vance’s claim that former President Donald Trump has “explicitly” stated he would veto a nationwide abortion ban.

Speakers at the Democratic National Convention (DNC) this week warned that Trump and his allies will work to ban abortion nationwide, despite Trump’s protests to the contrary. Those protestations have been unconvincing to many who have heard Trump’s boasts about ending Roe v. Wade and have read Mission 2025.

On this week’s version of NBC’s Meet the Press, host Kristen Welker pressed Vance multiple times by flat-out asking if Trump will veto a nationwide ban — and calling out Vance’s declare Trump has already promised a veto:

KRISTEN WELKER: Let’s discuss any other big difficulty. It used to be pointed out on the Democratic Nationwide Convention, it’s being mentioned on the campaign trail: abortion. Democrats made the case this week and past this week that Donald Trump, if elected, will impose a federal ban on abortion if he wins. Now, Donald Trump says he won’t. But are you able to commit, Senator, sitting right here with me these days, that when you and Donald Trump are elected that you will now not impose a federal ban on abortion?

SEN. JD VANCE: I will completely commit that, Kristen. And Donald Trump has been as clear about that as imaginable. I — I believe it’s necessary to step again and say, “What has Donald Trump if truth be told said on the abortion question, and the way is it totally different from what Kamala Harris and the Democrats have mentioned?” Donald Trump desires to finish this tradition conflict over this specific topic. If Kamala, excuse me, if California desires to have a unique abortion policy from Ohio, then Ohio has to recognize California, and California has to admire Ohio. Donald Trump’s view is that we would like the person states, and their person cultures, and their distinctive political sensibilities to make these selections as a result of we don’t want to have a nonstop federal conflict over this issue. The federal govt needs to be desirous about getting food costs down, getting housing costs down. Concerns, after all, the place Kamala Harris has been a total catastrophe. So I think Donald Trump is correct. We would like the federal govt to center of attention on these big financial and immigration questions. Let the states determine their own abortion policies.

KRISTEN WELKER: Let me simply follow up with you a little bit bit on that time. As a result of I’ve been talking to Republicans, including Senator Lindsey Graham simply final week, who’ve made it very clear that if Donald Trump is elected, in case you are elected, they’ll continue to press this point. Senator Graham stated to me, “I’m going to maintain announcing that there should be a federal ban.” If such a piece of rules landed on Donald Trump’s desk, would he veto it?

SEN. JD VANCE: Smartly, I believe it will be very clear he would no longer reinforce it. I imply, he’s stated that explicitly —

KRISTEN WELKER: But would he veto it?

SEN. JD VANCE: Sure, I imply, in case you’re not supporting it because the President of america, you essentially need to veto it —

KRISTEN WELKER: So he would veto a federal abortion ban?

SEN. JD VANCE: I believe he would. He’s mentioned that explicitly that he would. And again, Lindsey —

KRISTEN WELKER: I don’t assume he’s ever stated explicitly that he would. He’s said that to you?

SEN. JD VANCE: Lindsey Graham, Kristen, I’d be stunned – I imply once more, I want to see the context on what Lindsey Graham said. As a result of Lindsey Graham himself has now not advocated a federal abortion ban. Lindsey Graham has recommended —

KRISTEN WELKER: A 15-week federal abortion ban —

SEN. JD VANCE: – a federal minimal standard. Now, to be clear, that isn’t Donald Trump’s view. Donald Trump disagrees with Lindsey Graham on this. However no Republican, as a minimum no Republican with any cheap power, is announcing that we should have a whole national abortion ban. I haven’t heard that from any of my colleagues. And to be clear, Donald Trump I think has staked his position and made it very explicit. He wants this to be a state resolution, states are going to make this resolution themselves.
