Rep. Nick Lalota (R-NY) presided over an otherwise commonplace day of Home industry until he single-handedly admitted the USA’ southern neighbor to the Union on Friday.
Well, no longer fairly.
Lalota sat within the speaker’s chair throughout ground action on a funding bill for the Department of the Interior. At one level, he sought to acknowledge Rep. Teresa Leger Fernandez (D-NM), however omitted crucial word.
“For what objective does the gentleman from–” Lalota commenced, before correcting himself while committing another error “Excuse me, the gentlewoman from Mexico searching for popularity?”
“From New Mexico, Mr. Speaker,” Leger Fernandez instructed him with a smile. “I have a motion!”
As individuals within the chamber hooted, Lalota will be heard asking the clerk subsequent to him, “Did I say Mexico?”
After a voice vote on her motion to recommit, Lalota decided that the “no” votes prevailed. Leger Fernandez rose once more.
“Mr. Speaker,” she mentioned.
“The gentlewoman from New Mexico is identified,” he said this time.
Leger Fernandez requested a roll call vote.
Friday was once a day of misspeaks for Republicans in the House. In addition to including Mexico as a state, Speaker Mike Johnson (R-LA) sent a fundraising e-mail to supporters that contained a fairly interesting line.
“The woke, liberal agenda places Americans remaining. I want to put Americans FIRST,” the e-mail read. “I refuse to put people over politics.”
