CNN’s Jake Tapper requested Republican presidential candidate Chris Christie whether or not the GOP “has an authoritarian drawback” on Monday’s adaptation of The Lead.

Former President Donald Trump maintains a big lead over his Republican competitors regardless of being beneath indictment in 4 jurisdictions. Two of those indictments stem from his attempts to overturn the 2020 presidential election, which he misplaced.

Tapper asked the previous New Jersey governor if this indicates an authoritarian streak within his birthday party.

“[Y]ou do describe the conduct of Donald Trump trying to overturn the election as reprehensible,” the anchor said. “Republican voters don’t appear to have an issue with it. And I’m questioning, do you suppose that your party has an authoritarian drawback? That they in point of fact honestly don’t have a problem with violently seeking to stop a free and fair election from going forward?”

Christie denied the recommendation.

“No, Jake, I completely don’t think that we’ve that drawback,” he replied. “I believe what now we have is a Donald Trump downside and that right now, what’s long gone on is that individuals view Donald Trump synonymously with the Republican Party, and that should you oppose Trump, that’s by some means favoring Biden. And plenty of Republicans don’t need to try this for extraordinarily obvious causes.”

The previous governor then reiterated some of his previous attacks on Trump, noting the previous president’s affinity for dictators. Christie additionally dinged Trump for skipping the primary Republican presidential debate on Wednesday.

“He doesn’t want to debate with somebody as he showed on Wednesday night,” he stated. “He doesn’t want anyone to disagree with him. And, seem, that’s simply not the way our system works. And I know that in actual fact what matters essentially the most. I’m going to continue to stand up for the truth.”
