CNN political analyst David Axelrod channeled Succession personality Logan Roy when describing House Republicans’ reputedly forthcoming efforts to begin impeachment proceedings towards President Joe Biden.

On Monday, Speaker Kevin McCarthy (R-CA) gave the strongest indication yet that he plans to proceed with an impeachment inquiry in opposition to Biden. Congressional Republicans allege the president was once or presumably still is engaged in an influence-peddling and/or bribery scheme – evidence of which they have but to existing, past claiming Biden used to be concerned with his son’s business dealings.

“The White Home says it’s for Republicans to make a decision whether or not to head beforehand and take a look at to question President Biden,” Wolf Blitzer mentioned on Tuesday’s model of The Situation Room. “What do you are making of that option to deflect away from this escalation by means of House Republicans?”

“This is no large winner for the Republican Party, at the least in districts which Republicans have aggressive races,” Axelrod replied. “What it is, is a method for the speaker – who has his head in a vice with the Freedom Caucus on one end and Donald Trump on the opposite – to assuage them.”

The Obama administration alumnus went on to assert that what Republicans have introduced so far does now not remotely qualify as an impeachable offense:

And Wolf, I’m now not here, truthfully, as a spokesperson for a birthday party or a president. I’m right here as a senior political commentator for CNN. And I just have to assert, I take this very significantly, whether or not it’s a Republican president, Democratic president. If there’s wrongdoing, it must be pursued. It will have to be dealt with.

However that’s no longer what that is. We’ve had the Republicans stumbling around like so many Inspector Clouseaus for a year and a half of looking for one thing, the rest to impugn the president. They haven’t discovered it. And now it’s like, “We’ll impeach. Important points to be determined.”

To cite the great Logan Roy, these should not severe people. But it’s serious what they’re doing, and it is severely damaging to our democracy.
