Congressman Byron Donalds (R-FL) defended former President Donald Trump’s suggesting that Black voters can relate to him on account of his indictments.
In a heated trade on Meet the Press, NBC’s Kristen Welker confronted Donalds — who is one of 5 Black Republicans in Congress — about feedback Trump made at a summit of Black conservatives in South Carolina on Friday.
“And then I got indicted a 2nd time and then a 3rd time and a fourth time!” Trump stated. “And lots of people said that that’s why the Black individuals like me, because they have got been harm so badly and discriminated against. They usually in reality considered me as– I’m being discriminated against. It’s been pretty amazing.”
“Congressman, it appears like Donald Trump was once implying that he can win black voters as a result of they get indicted all the time too,” Welker said. “Is that what he used to be saying?”
“I believe that’s part of it,” Donalds stated. He went to quote the economic system and border as different main issues for Black voters, sooner than launching into a more full safety of the previous president’s remark.
“When you layer on the truth that, yes, that is political persecution from the Department of Justice and from radical DA’s all over our us of a, that is one thing equivalent that Black folks have to care for, with the justice machine themselves,” Donalds stated.
Welker directly reality-checked the Florida Republican
“Congressman, let’s simply be clear,” Welker said. “All four indictments in opposition to former President Trump were introduced by means of grand juries. There is no evidence that the indictments are political in nature.”
The Meet the Press moderator went on to reference criticism of Trump from former congressman Cedric Richmond, a Biden marketing campaign co-chair.
“Donald Trump claiming that black American citizens will improve him on account of his criminal prices is insulting,” Richmond stated. “It’s moronic and it’s just simple racist.”
Donalds responded through taking a shot at Richmond.
“Cedric is trying to play politics and use racial politics,” he stated.
“Had been you offended at all via his comments, Congressman?” Welker requested.
The Florida congressman used to be unequivocal.
“No, I wasn’t,” Donalds mentioned. “As a result of I understood what the president was once speaking about.”
