CNN Senior Political Analyst Gloria Borger expressed exasperation at 2024 Republican presidential candidates not named Donald Trump over their refusals to criticize the former president.
Trump has led the GOP container for months in ballot after poll. Rather than former New Jersey Governor Chris Christie and former Arkansas Governor Asa Hutchinson, the candidates have evaded going after Trump, lest they anger a large chunk of the Republican base. This dynamic has raised the query as to whether some of the candidates within the race are truly challenging the frontrunner, or are merely hoping for a position in a second Trump administration.
Even after Trump has been indicted thrice – together with again this week – his opponents have been either largely silent and even important of the prosecutions.
“I nonetheless am simply at a loss for words at why each person is scared to loss of life to name this what it’s,” former Rep. Adam Kinzinger said on CNN’s AC360 on Wednesday. “[T]hese candidates working for president, I think they’re still hoping similar to in 2016 that in some way this magic pony is gonna come out of the sky and Donald Trump is gonna be taken out of this race. And seeing that they confirmed enough fealty to Donald Trump, possibly now they can scrape up some of his voters and win. It’s no longer gonna happen. And best Chris Christie and a pair others have had the courage to do anything else. It just blows me away.”
Host Anderson Cooper grew to become to Borger and asked her to weigh in.
“I completely agree. I don’t comprehend what DeSantis is waiting for here,” she spoke back, relating to Governor Ron DeSantis, who is working 2d in the back of Trump via dozens of points. “Seem, this can be a former president who has a fifty four% recognition in the Republican Party.
